“Utpanna” means origin or birth. This day, falling on the Krishna Paksha (waning moon) of the Margashirsha month (November–December), is believed to mark the manifestation of Goddess Ekadashi from Lord Vishnu’s divine energy.
It is the first of all 24 Ekadashis, a foundation stone for the entire Hindu fasting tradition. According to the Padma Purana and Skanda Purana, this is the day when the practice of Ekadashi vrat was established for the upliftment of human souls.

In the ancient Satya Yuga, a powerful asura named Mura terrorized the heavens and earth. He defeated the Devas – Indra, Agni, Vayu, and even Lord Brahma – and declared himself lord of the three worlds. From his fortress city Chandravati, Mura spread darkness and fear.

Helpless, the defeated deities approached Lord Shiva, who directed them to Lord Vishnu, the Preserver. Moved by their plight, Vishnu vowed to defeat Mura and restore cosmic balance. Accompanied by the Devas, He marched toward Chandravati.

A colossal war raged for a thousand celestial years. Vishnu unleashed His Sudarshan Chakra and divine weapons, but Mura’s mystical powers rendered them ineffective. Finally, Lord Vishnu retreated to the Himalayan hermitage of Badarikashrama and rested inside a vast cave called Himavati.

When Mura discovered the sleeping Lord, he rushed in to attack. At that moment, a radiant goddess emerged from Vishnu’s body – armed with celestial weapons and filled with righteous fury. This was Ekadashi Devi, a manifestation of divine Shakti.

The goddess challenged Mura and defeated him in a blazing battle, beheading him instantly. When Lord Vishnu awoke and saw the demon destroyed, He blessed the goddess, declaring, “You were born on the eleventh lunar day; you shall be known as Ekadashi. Those who fast and worship Me on your day shall attain moksha.”

Thus was born the sacred practice of Ekadashi vrat – a celebration of spiritual discipline, inner strength, and divine grace.
